[00:01:06] Hey, everyone. My name is Nikki Young, and this is Serial Napper, the true crime podcast for naps. I'm back with another true crime story to lull you to sleep, or perhaps to give you nightmares.

[00:01:38] Tonight's story began on one of the most infamous television shows in history, The Jerry Springer Show, and it ended in tragedy. Nancy Campbell Panitz wasn't the kind of person you would envision appearing on Springer. She was a quiet, mild-mannered single mother who preferred to stay out of the spotlight.

[00:02:00] However, when she was approached by the show for a chance to reunite with her ex-husband, Ralph Panitz, and his mistress live on national television, she believed that this was her chance to get Ralph back. However, when Nancy stepped on stage that day, the producers quickly made it clear what they really wanted—a spectacle.

[00:02:21] They weren't interested in reconciliation. They wanted a fight—loud, dramatic, and full of conflict in front of a live audience. Realizing the show wasn't the platform she'd hoped for, Nancy made a brave decision and walked off of the stage. What happened next would shock the world. Just weeks after filming, when the episode finally aired, Nancy Campbell Panitz was brutally murdered by her ex-husband.

[00:02:49] Despite a restraining order, granted just that day, Ralph went to her home, and in a fit of rage, he beat and strangled her to death. The murder of Nancy Campbell Panitz became one of the most notorious tragedies connected to The Jerry Springer Show, a program known for pushing its guests into heated, often violent confrontations.

[00:03:12] So, dim the lights, put your phone down, and listen to the details of Nancy's life, her ill-fated appearance on the show, and to the brutal crime that followed, leading many to question the ethics of a show like Jerry Springer. So let's jump right in. Nancy Campbell was a 52-year-old single mother who had spent much of her life raising her two sons, Jeffrey and Gary, in Michigan.

[00:03:39] Nancy was a woman who valued her independence and her small family. Jeffrey, her eldest son, had fond memories of his mother, remembering her as the bedrock of their family after the death of his father when he was just a toddler. He would say, quote,

[00:04:06] Nancy was not one for attention. In fact, she was a very quiet and reserved person, someone who didn't like having her picture taken, and she didn't date all that much either. She was content with her life, content being alone. That is, until the internet came into her life and kind of changed everything. On the other side of the world in Germany, a man named Ralph Panitz was looking for connection.

[00:04:34] A German painting contractor, Ralph found his way to an AOL chatroom. His screen name was Plainwell, and Nancy, who had just recently learned about chatrooms from a family member, went by Cupcakes99. They struck up a conversation, which would lead to a year-long transcontinental romance. After months of chatting online, Ralph decided to make a big move.

[00:05:02] He left Germany and moved all the way to Michigan to marry Nancy in 1997. The couple was ready to start their life together, but this was just the beginning of a story that would unfold with shocking twists. Shortly after moving to Michigan, the couple relocated to Florida. By 1998, Ralph, now living in the States, changed his screen name to Wolf Smile 2 and started referring to himself as Wolfie. Gag.

[00:05:31] But what started as a whirlwind romance quickly turned into something far more tumultuous. According to court records, their relationship became a constant cycle of breakups and reconciliations, a drama that felt more like a soap opera than a marriage. And it wasn't long before things escalated in the most dangerous of ways. Nancy's son, Jeffrey, would later describe the violence that began to seep into the relationship. He said, quote,

[00:06:00] it wasn't long after their wedding that there was a domestic issue. Ralph had thrown her on the floor and she had hit her head. After that, she left and filed for divorce. The violence was a pattern that wouldn't end with that incident. And as their relationship spiraled, Nancy found herself stuck in a toxic on-again, off-again relationship that would lead her down a dark path. After years of back and forth in their on-again,

[00:06:30] off-again marriage, Nancy finally decided to leave Ralph, filing for divorce after a violent altercation. But the story didn't end there. Ralph had already moved on, meeting a woman named Eleanor online in 1999. Like Ralph, Eleanor was coming off of a failed marriage. And despite her family's concerns, especially about Ralph's drinking and the fact that they suspected he might be using her for a green card,

[00:06:58] Eleanor married Ralph in a small ceremony on March 17, 2000. But what Eleanor didn't know was that Ralph's past with Nancy was far from over. Ralph had painted a very different picture for Eleanor, one where Nancy was a constant presence in their lives, stalking them relentlessly. According to Ralph, Nancy wouldn't leave them alone, following them everywhere, constantly interfering with their new life.

[00:07:28] In fact, he had convinced Eleanor that Nancy's obsessive behavior needed to be confronted. And what better place to confront her than the Jerry Springer show? Now you might be wondering though, if you truly believed that someone was stalking you, why on earth would you want to confront them on a television show like Jerry Springer? Well, the answer lies in the kind of show Jerry Springer had become by the year 2000. The Jerry Springer show,

[00:07:59] which had originally debuted in 1991 as a more tame daytime talk show, had quickly evolved into something far more sensational. By the late 90s, it had become known for its tabloid style over-the-top drama. Love triangles, confrontations, shocking revelations, interviews with the KKK. They were the show's bread and butter. It wasn't just about airing dirty laundry. It was about creating chaos

[00:08:27] in front of a live audience just for ratings. In fact, TV Guide even dubbed it the worst television show of all time. But despite its reputation, people still tuned in, drawn by the spectacle. On May 7, 2000, Ralph, Eleanor, and Nancy were set to appear on an episode titled Secret Mistresses Confronted. The plan was for Eleanor and Ralph to confront Nancy about her supposed stalking,

[00:08:57] to tell her to stay out of their lives once and for all. But Nancy had no idea about any of this. She was being led to believe that she was there to reunite with Ralph and to fix their relationship. In one of the cruelest twists of fate, the day that the episode was filmed also happened to be Nancy's birthday. And she thought she was going on the show to reconcile with her ex-husband, who had begged her to be there. But little did she know,

[00:09:27] Ralph had orchestrated the entire thing, setting her up for a public confrontation that would soon turn deadly. When Nancy walked on stage that day, she thought she was there to work through her troubled relationship with her ex-husband, Ralph Panitz. But instead, she was thrust into a public spectacle, one that would leave her humiliated and emotionally broken. Nancy, who had been married to Ralph for just 15 months before divorcing,

[00:09:57] appeared on the show hoping to explain how she and Ralph were trying to restore their marriage. But the producers, in their quest for ratings, they had other plans. Nancy found herself immediately framed as the villain, a jealous ex-wife who just couldn't accept the fact that her ex-husband had moved on with a new woman, Eleanor. As soon as Eleanor entered the stage, the verbal assault began. Both Eleanor and Ralph

[00:10:27] mocked Nancy, calling her old and fat in front of the live audience. And they just all sat there and laughed. The insults were cruel, and the hurt was evident on Nancy's face. She turned bright red. She looked like a deer in headlights. But it wasn't just the insults about her appearance that would devastate Nancy. It was the shocking truth that was revealed next, something Nancy never saw coming. For the first time, she learned that Ralph and Eleanor

[00:10:57] weren't just a couple. They were married now. Can you imagine the gut-wrenching realization for Nancy? A woman who had once shared a life with Ralph, only to be blindsided by the revelation that the man she had hoped to reconcile with had already moved on in the most permanent of ways. And then Ralph dropped yet another bombshell. He admitted in the two nights leading up to the show, he had been sleeping with Nancy in her hotel room.

[00:11:26] He claimed it was all part of his plan because if he didn't sleep with her, she might have backed out. He told her that he needed to do it to get her to agree. Can you even begin to process the level of betrayal that Nancy must have felt? Her ex-husband, the man she had once loved, had been playing her all along, sleeping with her, telling her they were going to work it out. And then he brought her on this stage only to completely

[00:11:54] devastate and humiliate her. And in a scene meant to break Nancy, the insults kept coming. Eleanor screamed at her, quote, Ralph loves me and he wants to be with me. And you, redheaded bitch from hell, you need to leave us alone. You need to get a life. I hope you enjoyed yourself immensely the last two nights because it is the last time you are ever going to see him. He wants to be with me. What is truly heartbreaking about this moment

[00:12:24] is that Nancy, instead of engaging in a fight or a verbal altercation, she made a painful decision to just simply walk off the stage. She didn't want to give them the satisfaction. She knew that no matter what she said, it didn't matter. As she left the stage, the audience jeered, further compounding the public humiliation. Ralph and Eleanor embraced as if they had won some sort of twisted victory.

[00:12:53] But rather than taking responsibility for his actions, Ralph, ever the manipulator, seemed unfazed. In fact, Eleanor, instead of blaming Ralph for sleeping with Nancy to get her to appear, blamed the show itself for bringing them together. Eleanor even forgave Ralph for his transgressions. She didn't seem to acknowledge or care that he was sleeping with them both while pitting them against one another. Behind the scenes,

[00:13:22] Nancy wasn't just facing the emotional fallout of being humiliated on TV. She was now faced with an impossible decision, return to the stage or risk being stranded in Chicago. According to her son Jeffrey, Nancy was informed backstage that if she didn't return to the stage to finish the show, she wouldn't be given a return ticket back home to Florida. He said, backstage, my mom was informed that if she didn't return to the

[00:13:52] end of the show, they wouldn't provide her with a return ticket back to Florida and she wasn't having that. With no other choice and no help from producers, Nancy found herself walking the streets of Chicago all alone. She had no money, no way to get home, and no one from the show even bothered to check on her or offer any kind of support. But in a twist of kindness, a good Samaritan saw Nancy in distress and bought her a bus ticket back home to Florida.

[00:14:22] It was a small act of compassion in a city that had shown her nothing but cruelty. It's time for a quick break and a word from tonight's sponsors. Hang on, I'll be back before you know it. [00:16:22] Nancy had been publicly humiliated, emotionally broken, and then abandoned by her ex-husband. The Jerry Springer show had moved on, eager for its next spectacle, and they never once followed up with Nancy to check on her. And yet, the story doesn't even end here. After the show aired, things quickly spiraled for Ralph, Eleanor, and Nancy. Just a month after their appearance on Jerry Springer, Ralph and his new wife, Eleanor, they separated.

[00:16:51] Surprise, surprise. Ralph went back to Nancy, and together they put money down on a house. One of the biggest tragedies here is just how caught up in this man Nancy was. Despite being completely embarrassed by him and cheated on, Nancy took Ralph back. She saw it as a win in this tug-of-war with Eleanor over a disgusting pig of a man. But by early July, the same pattern of

[00:17:21] deceit began again. Ralph, never content with just one woman, started messaging Eleanor again, asking her to take him back. In his twisted game, he was playing both women, pitting them against each other, just as he always had. Ralph's manipulation took its toll on Nancy. She and Ralph broke up once again more, and just days later, Ralph moved Eleanor into the very home that he had shared with Nancy. Ralph's adult nephew,

[00:17:51] Marcus, also moved in with them. But in an odd twist, it's been reported that at one point, the three of them, Nancy, Ralph, and Eleanor, they had all been living together in that very same house for weeks. Allegedly, the police were having to show up at this home all the time to break up fights between the three of them, each claiming that Ralph was their man, and that was their home. Imagine the tension, the resentment, the betrayal.

[00:18:20] It's a living nightmare, and it was about to get worse. On July 24, 2000, Nancy, desperate for a sense of control over her life, took the brave step of going to court and ending this whole ordeal for good. She sought a restraining order against Ralph and demanded possession of the house, the house that she had put money down on. Her testimony painted a chilling picture of their volatile and violent confrontations.

[00:18:50] According to court records, Ralph had taken Nancy's life savings, threatened her, and even physically assaulted her. She described how Ralph had chased her with a knife, body slammed her against walls, kicked her in the stomach, and gave her a concussion. The judge granted Nancy's request for both the restraining order and the possession of the house. On that very same day as Nancy gained some control over her life, Ralph, Eleanor, and Ralph's nephew Marcus

[00:19:19] were ordered to vacate the house within 15 minutes. While Eleanor and Marcus packed up their belongings as quickly as they could, Ralph headed to a nearby bar. He was already seething from the court ruling, and it just so happened their episode from the Jerry Springer show was airing that day, and he'd have a chance to watch the broadcast at the bar. As Ralph sat there drinking, watching himself on TV, his rage

[00:19:49] began to build. He had already been consuming numerous alcoholic beverages. He had been drinking heavily, but the anger he felt while watching the show, it seemed to tip him over the edge. According to one patron who witnessed the scene, at one point Ralph leaned over and muttered, I am going to kill her. This, of course, was in reference to Nancy. The very woman who had been trying to reclaim her life after all the turmoil he had put her through.

[00:20:19] Ralph's words were chilling, but no one knew just how quickly they would turn into a deadly reality. Ralph left the bar, his anger and alcohol fueled rage clouding his judgment. He returned home where Eleanor and Marcus were still in the process of packing up their belongings. He laid down on the bed while they continued to pack, but soon, a police car pulled up to the house with Nancy. They were there to take possession of the house. Because of

[00:20:49] the restraining order that had been granted, Ralph slipped out of the bedroom window while Eleanor and Marcus drove away with whatever they could fit in their car. The home now belonged to Nancy. She had one possession of the property. However, shortly after leaving the house, Eleanor would say that something began to nag at her. A gut feeling, perhaps, that something awful was about to happen. Her and Marcus decided that they would return to the house. They had a

[00:21:19] sense that Ralph might return home and do something terrible. They feared for Nancy's life. Ralph was drunk, angry, and currently unaccounted for. So they pulled back up to Nancy's home and Marcus went up to the front door while Eleanor remained waiting in the car. Marcus knocked on the door but no one answered. The door appeared to be locked and barricaded. So Marcus ran over to a neighbor's home and told him to call 911 because he thought that someone was possibly

[00:21:48] being killed in the home. He thought that Ralph was inside killing Nancy. According to Eleanor, she decided to circle the block a few times because she didn't want to be seen at the house when the police arrived. And that's when she says she spotted Ralph running down the street. She told him to get in the car and they took off. Now when police arrived at Nancy's home, they found Nancy on the kitchen floor. She had been beaten and strangled to death.

[00:22:18] She was in such bad condition that she was unrecognizable. It was a very bloody scene with a significant clue left behind. There were shoe print impressions left in the blood on the kitchen floor, as well as shoe prints on Nancy's face. In the print, a Skechers brand logo could be identified. Now, they just needed to find who had been wearing that Skechers shoe. Nancy had been killed just hours after a judge

[00:22:48] granted her a restraining order against her ex-husband, Ralph. When authorities first arrived at Nancy Campbell Panett's home, that fateful day, they found themselves in a race against time. They had no idea what they were walking into, but they knew one thing for sure. They needed to speak to Ralph immediately. He was the prime suspect, but what was unclear was whether Eleanor, his new was in

[00:23:17] fact being held hostage by Ralph. Either way, they knew that the two were together and they needed to find them. As law enforcement scrambled to locate Ralph and Eleanor, they issued a Bolo, be on the lookout alert. The couple was reportedly seen fleeing the area, heading south towards South Carolina, and then west towards the Midwest. For days, it appeared that they were on the run everywhere, but nowhere at the same time. It was believed that eventually they were going

[00:23:46] to try to flee to Canada. The search spanned four days, but the authorities couldn't confirm their exact whereabouts. Eleanor, for her part, would later claim that she had no idea what had happened to Nancy. She said she thought that they were fleeing immigration officials, not the police. According to Eleanor, Ralph had convinced her that Nancy had called immigration on him, putting him at risk of being deported back to Germany. Eleanor said she

[00:24:16] believed Ralph was on the run from that threat, not from a murder investigation. She claimed that, at the time, she had no knowledge of Nancy's death, none at all. It wasn't until days later when her father called her to say that Nancy was dead, that she had been murdered. That's when the horrifying truth began to unfold. Ralph, on the other hand, insisted that he wasn't the one who killed Nancy. But his words, as always,

[00:24:46] were contradictory. He didn't know it yet, but his lies would be exposed when they would turn themselves into the police just four days later. The couple finally turned themselves in, but the details they didn't know, those small, damning details, would prove to be their undoing. Ralph was wearing the same pair of blue sketchers, the exact same shoes he had worn the night he murdered Nancy. The shoes matched the prints found in Nancy's blood,

[00:25:16] and horrifyingly, the ones on her face. Ralph was initially charged with first-degree murder, but in a stunning twist, that charge was later lowered to second-degree murder. What remained unclear, however, was Eleanor's involvement. She had been with Ralph the entire time, but she insisted she had no knowledge of the murder. As a result, Eleanor was held as a material witness, but no charges were brought against her. She continued

[00:25:45] to claim that she had nothing to do with Nancy's death. She also believed that Ralph was falsely accused. She couldn't face the truth that her darling husband had violently killed his ex-wife Nancy. So, what happened that night? Was Ralph the sole perpetrator acting in a blind rage, or was Eleanor in some way complicit in this brutal crime? The authorities might not have had enough evidence to charge her, but the lingering questions about

[00:26:15] her role in Nancy's murder would follow her for years to come. In the end, Ralph Panitz was convicted of second-degree murder for the brutal killing of his ex-wife, Nancy. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a fate that he will live with for the rest of his days. Today, Ralph remains behind bars, a man who manipulated, deceived, and ultimately killed, all while playing his victims against each other.

[00:26:45] Eleanor, despite everything that's happened, still stands by her man. She continues to support Ralph financially, visiting him every weekend in prison. She lives alone in a small trailer holding on to the belief that Ralph did not receive a fair trial. Eleanor insists that law enforcement didn't look for any other suspects. She believes that they rushed to blame Ralph simply because they recognized him from the Jerry

[00:27:15] Springer show. The reality in Eleanor's eyes is that they pin the crime on him without fully investigating any other possibilities. Her support for him hasn't wavered. She remains convinced that Ralph deserves a chance to be repatriated to Germany, hoping that a transfer there might lead to a lesser sentence because they are a little more lax on murder charges, apparently. But to date, all of his attempts to be sent back to Germany have failed.

[00:27:45] Meanwhile, Nancy's son, Jeffrey, fought his own battle after his mother's death. He took legal action, suing the Jerry Springer show and its producers, holding them responsible for their role that they played in Nancy's tragic final moments. Jeffrey's case, however, was ultimately dropped without any monetary settlement. The pain of losing his mother wasn't something that money could fix, but it is clear that the show's actions had lasting consequences on his family.

[00:28:15] In April 2023, Jerry Springer passed away at the age of 79 after dealing with pancreatic cancer. A figure whose show defined an era, Springer left behind a complicated legacy, a legacy he himself was aware of. Springer once said, quote, I just apologize. I'm so sorry. What have I done? I've ruined the culture. I just hope hell isn't that hot because I

[00:28:45] burn real easy. I'm very light-complected. Look, my show is stupid. It's stupid. But it's fun to do. I enjoy it. People obviously like it. Why do you think it's stupid? Well, because it has no redeeming social value. It's an hour of escapism. But at least our show is reality. What we call reality shows today, it really isn't reality. And what I mean by that is it may be unscripted,

[00:29:14] but it's not reality. What you do is you create a situation that didn't normally exist. You put people on an island. You put strangers in a house. But you put people on a stage. You give them some chairs to throw at each other. And that's, by the way, should, that's my answer. None of that's fake. Oh, it has to be real. The lawyers are all over it. The reactions may be embellished because they've seen the show a hundred times. The audience is screaming, yelling, you know. You could put those same people on when Oprah had a show and they

[00:29:44] would sit in their chairs and behave absolutely appropriately. But my question is, do you think that you paved the way at all for some of these staged reality TV shows? I am the father of the destruction of Western civilization. I have done that. His words, spoken with kind of a sense of remorse, reflect the weight of the damage that his show has caused, not just in the lives of its participants, but in the culture that embraced its chaos. The Jerry Springer show

[00:30:14] was entertainment, but for Nancy Campbell Panett, it was much more than that. It was the beginning of her end. In the case of Nancy, justice may have been served, but it came too late for her. And for the people who loved her, it's a reminder of the human cost of exploitation, all in the name of ratings.
