On the evening of October 12, 2012, a chilling 911 call shook Highland Heights, Kentucky. Shayna Hubers, just 21 years old, calmly reported, "I killed my boyfriend in self-defense." When police arrived, they found Ryan Poston, a 29-year-old rising star in the legal world, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Shayna claimed she acted in desperation, but as investigators delved deeper into their tumultuous relationship, they uncovered a dark tale of possessive love, rejection, and obsession.
Ryan was trying to escape the toxic dynamic with Shayna. However, she couldn't accept his attempts to break free. The night of the murder, Ryan was supposed to meet Audrey Bolte, Miss Ohio 2012, for a date, further fueling Shayna's jealousy. As the investigation unfolded, evidence revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior from Shayna, including bizarre statements and actions that raised questions about her true motives. Join me as I explore the twisted events leading up to Ryan's tragic death and the complex trial that followed, where Shayna's claims of self-defense were put to the test. Was it a desperate act of self-preservation or a calculated act of murder?

[00:01:05] My name is Nikki Young, and this is Serial Napper, the true crime podcast for naps.
[00:01:11] I'm back with another true crime story to lull you to sleep, or perhaps to give you nightmares.
[00:01:16] On the evening of October 12, 2012, in Highland Heights, Kentucky, 911 received a call that would shake even the most seasoned dispatcher.
[00:01:26] The voice on the end of the other line was that of 21-year-old Shana Hubers, who matter-of-factly reported, quote,
[00:01:34] I killed my boyfriend in self-defense.
[00:01:37] When police arrived on the scene, they found a man dead from gunshot.
[00:01:42] The victim, 29-year-old Ryan Poston, was a rising star in the legal world, a young attorney who had recently launched his own law firm.
[00:01:52] Shana insisted that she had shot Ryan as a desperate act of self-defense.
[00:01:57] However, as investigators learned more about their toxic relationship, a relationship that Ryan had fought to escape, they weren't so sure.
[00:02:06] What followed would unravel a twisted and tragic story of possessive love and mounting rejection.
[00:02:13] So, dim the lights, put your phone down, and listen as I dig into the disturbing details of Ryan Poston's death,
[00:02:22] the chilling 911 call that launched an investigation,
[00:02:25] and the complex web of manipulation and obsession that led to this devastating crime.
[00:02:31] So, let's jump right in.
[00:02:34] Ryan Carter Poston was born on December 30, 1982, in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, to his parents, Lisa and Jay Poston.
[00:02:43] He was their eldest child, and he had a younger brother who he was very protective over.
[00:02:48] When he was just a child, Ryan's parents divorced, and his mother remarried a man named Peter Carter,
[00:02:55] who Ryan loved dearly as his stepfather.
[00:02:57] So much so, that he had his middle name changed to Carter, his stepdad's last name.
[00:03:04] From his mother and stepdad's side, he would have three younger sisters,
[00:03:08] and he was just as protective with them as he was with his little brother.
[00:03:13] In high school, Ryan studied at the International School of Manila in the Philippines,
[00:03:18] and the Geneva International School in Switzerland,
[00:03:21] which gave him a broad global perspective.
[00:03:24] He knew from a fairly early age that he felt driven by a deep commitment to justice
[00:03:29] and making a positive impact in the world,
[00:03:32] which is why he knew he was destined to become a lawyer.
[00:03:36] But not just any lawyer,
[00:03:38] one who dedicated his career to fighting for justice for those with limited resources.
[00:03:43] In fact, it ran in his blood.
[00:03:46] Ryan came from a family with a strong legal tradition.
[00:03:50] His grandfather, James Poston Sr., was a lawyer for 54 years,
[00:03:55] and his uncle, James Poston Jr., was also an attorney.
[00:04:00] Ryan earned his law degree from the Sam and P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
[00:04:05] He also graduated from Indiana University in 2005,
[00:04:10] where he triple majored in political science, history, and geography.
[00:04:15] After graduating, he wasted no time in getting started in practicing law as an attorney in Cincinnati.
[00:04:23] He lived and breathed his work,
[00:04:26] often taking cases that he felt were important pro bono.
[00:04:30] He just wanted to make a difference any way that he could,
[00:04:33] and he was a great attorney,
[00:04:35] so this was his way of helping those who were stuck in a legal mess
[00:04:38] and unable to help themselves.
[00:04:41] Ryan was young, successful, and extremely handsome.
[00:04:46] Honestly, he could have had his pick of just about any girl,
[00:04:50] but it was Shana Hubers who caught his eye.
[00:04:53] In 2011, 28-year-old Ryan Poston was scrolling through Facebook
[00:04:58] when he landed on a photo of a bikini-clad Shana.
[00:05:02] She was a 19-year-old psychology major at the University of Kentucky
[00:05:07] and just as smart as she was beautiful.
[00:05:09] At the time that Ryan had made his interest known to her by liking her photo,
[00:05:14] she was pursuing her master's degree in school counseling.
[00:05:18] Besides the nine-year age gap, dot dot dot,
[00:05:22] they seemed to be a pretty good match.
[00:05:25] Both were great-looking, well-educated, and ambitious.
[00:05:29] So, it's no surprise that shortly after clicking that like button,
[00:05:33] they began chatting back and forth on Messenger
[00:05:35] and made plans to meet up for a real date.
[00:05:38] Their relationship would last about 18 months,
[00:05:42] and while it started off hot and heavy,
[00:05:44] it became extremely toxic fairly quickly.
[00:05:49] According to Ryan's friends,
[00:05:51] Shana appeared to be obsessed with Ryan and quite possessive.
[00:05:55] She would show up at his condo unannounced and uninvited,
[00:06:00] just to drop in and see what he was up to.
[00:06:02] She seemed convinced that he was stepping out on their relationship,
[00:06:07] no matter how much attention Ryan tried to shower her with.
[00:06:11] When they weren't physically together,
[00:06:14] she would blow up his phone,
[00:06:16] sending message after message,
[00:06:18] especially if he wasn't responding to her right away.
[00:06:21] Shana was simply not used to being told no.
[00:06:24] Born on April 8, 1991, in Lexington, Kentucky,
[00:06:29] she exhibited the traits of someone destined to stand out.
[00:06:33] In school, she excelled across the board as a model student and top achiever.
[00:06:38] She wasn't just book smart either.
[00:06:41] She was creatively talented and had a flair for the dramatic.
[00:06:45] She loved to sing and perform on stage,
[00:06:49] and she was good at it.
[00:06:50] But with her magnetic energy came a darker side.
[00:06:55] Some of Shana's former classmates and others who grew up with her
[00:06:59] would recall how she sometimes struggled with regulating her emotions.
[00:07:03] In particular, she didn't react very well to rejection.
[00:07:08] According to an old friend named Sarah Robinson,
[00:07:11] Shana didn't just handle disappointment.
[00:07:13] She felt it deeply.
[00:07:16] If she dated a boy who ended their relationship,
[00:07:20] or if there was a boy that she liked who rejected her,
[00:07:23] she would absolutely lose it.
[00:07:26] Scream, cry, and paint herself as the victim in any situation.
[00:07:31] It was far beyond any typical teenage response,
[00:07:35] which is saying a lot because, as we know, teens can be quite dramatic.
[00:07:39] While she was beautiful and would have physically been
[00:07:42] a dream girl for the boys to date,
[00:07:44] there were whispers that she should be avoided at all costs
[00:07:48] because of her intense emotional outbursts.
[00:07:52] Shana was a paradox,
[00:07:54] the perfect student and performer,
[00:07:56] but one who struggled with the fragile balance
[00:07:59] between passion and possessiveness.
[00:08:02] Her drive for perfection was admirable,
[00:08:05] but her emotional extremes would set the stage for much darker chapters in her life.
[00:08:11] Although Ryan was much older than Shana,
[00:08:14] he wasn't looking for anything serious in a relationship,
[00:08:17] and he certainly wasn't ready to get married and settle down.
[00:08:22] Perhaps that's why he chose someone who was so much younger than he was.
[00:08:26] Maybe he thought that she could be casual,
[00:08:29] that her youth meant that she still wanted to go out,
[00:08:32] live her life, and possibly date other people.
[00:08:35] But that wasn't the case.
[00:08:37] Shana had her eyes set on Ryan,
[00:08:40] whether he liked it or not.
[00:08:43] While their relationship was most definitely tumultuous no matter who you asked,
[00:08:48] the stories of what occurred between them would vary depending on
[00:08:51] whether you heard Ryan's version of events or Shana's.
[00:08:55] Shana accused Ryan of being emotionally abusive.
[00:08:59] She said that he would make mean comments about her weight
[00:09:03] and suggest that she get cosmetic surgery to fix certain insecurities about her looks.
[00:09:09] She would tell her friends that he treated her like a servant
[00:09:12] and that he was physically abusive towards her.
[00:09:16] In April 2012,
[00:09:18] after she confronted him about degrading remarks he had made towards her,
[00:09:22] she alleged that he picked her up and threw her onto the doorstep of his condo.
[00:09:27] Then he beat her as she tried to collect her belongings and leave.
[00:09:31] According to Ryan's friends,
[00:09:33] he was absolutely not physically abusive.
[00:09:36] However, Shana was obsessed.
[00:09:39] She texted him non-stop.
[00:09:42] When he wasn't available to her,
[00:09:44] she would manipulate him until he felt forced to respond.
[00:09:48] She had explosive emotional outbursts
[00:09:51] and showed up at his condo unannounced frequently.
[00:09:55] She would grab his phone when he was out of the room and search through it,
[00:09:59] blocking any other women that he may have been talking to.
[00:10:03] During the times when Ryan and Shana were not on speaking terms,
[00:10:07] she would obtain an out-of-state phone number to call him so that he would answer.
[00:10:12] During another one of their breakups,
[00:10:14] she faked a heart condition to gain his empathy.
[00:10:18] As the months passed and they broke up and then got back together over and over again,
[00:10:24] Ryan became tired of the situation.
[00:10:27] He had a lot on his plate already.
[00:10:30] He was really busy working with several clients,
[00:10:33] and he was in the midst of a lawsuit launched by a former partner of his from another law practice.
[00:10:39] He didn't have the energy to deal with the back-and-forth with Shana,
[00:10:43] so in 2012, he decided to end things for good.
[00:10:48] As you can imagine, this did not go over well with Shana.
[00:10:53] She refused to accept that the relationship was actually over.
[00:10:58] She continued to try and have a presence in his life by calling him,
[00:11:03] texting him,
[00:11:04] and even entering his condo with a key that she had kept from when they were a couple.
[00:11:09] A few weeks before his death,
[00:11:12] one of Ryan's co-workers would say that he walked into the building and he seemed sad,
[00:11:18] so she asked him what was wrong.
[00:11:20] According to this co-worker,
[00:11:22] Ryan asked her how to break up with someone who doesn't want to break up with you,
[00:11:26] and he spoke of applying for a restraining order.
[00:11:30] He was done.
[00:11:32] And he was already moving on.
[00:11:35] He was chatting with another young woman named Audrey Bolt,
[00:11:39] who was the former Miss Ohio.
[00:11:42] They were just beginning their relationship and made plans to go on their first date,
[00:11:47] which was scheduled for October 12, 2012.
[00:11:50] But Ryan knew that this new relationship would never work if Shana was still in the picture,
[00:11:56] and she refused to leave him alone,
[00:11:58] so he decided to try to do the adult thing.
[00:12:01] He needed to have an adult conversation with her,
[00:12:05] where they could finally put all of their past history to rest.
[00:12:09] At least, that's how the story goes,
[00:12:12] because Shana would have a very different opinion
[00:12:14] of how things would go down on October 11,
[00:12:17] when Ryan invited her out for dinner.
[00:12:20] According to Shana,
[00:12:22] there was never any discussion about cutting her off completely.
[00:12:25] In fact, she claimed that the dinner was romantic,
[00:12:29] and that they even decided to continue the evening by going back to Ryan's condo,
[00:12:34] where the two were intimate.
[00:12:37] We'll never truly know what happened that night,
[00:12:40] if Ryan was being wishy-washy with her,
[00:12:43] or if Shana simply refused to get the message,
[00:12:46] because by the following day,
[00:12:48] one of them would be dead,
[00:12:50] and the other would be investigated for murder.
[00:12:53] On the morning of October 12,
[00:12:55] the day that Ryan was supposed to go on that first date with Audrey,
[00:12:59] Shana had spent the previous night at his condo.
[00:13:02] Some reports stated that Ryan had locked himself in the bathroom overnight
[00:13:06] just to get away from Shana.
[00:13:09] However, Shana would deny this,
[00:13:12] insisting that she was invited to stay the night.
[00:13:15] That morning from Ryan's condo,
[00:13:18] Shana phoned her mother and said that she was having a panic attack,
[00:13:21] that she couldn't breathe.
[00:13:22] Her mother, who had probably done this many times before with her,
[00:13:27] jumped in her car and drove over to Ryan's to help her daughter.
[00:13:31] That's when Ryan woke up,
[00:13:33] shocked to find them both in his apartment,
[00:13:36] and Shana began crying,
[00:13:38] acting like she couldn't breathe,
[00:13:39] and insisting that she had to go to the hospital.
[00:13:42] Shana and her mother would leave,
[00:13:45] but instead of going to get any kind of medical attention,
[00:13:47] they went shopping.
[00:13:49] But that's not what she told Ryan.
[00:13:51] She continued to text Ryan throughout the day,
[00:13:54] updating him on her medical state,
[00:13:57] talking about further medical appointments
[00:13:59] and diagnoses, what was wrong with her.
[00:14:02] Meanwhile, she was just at the mall.
[00:14:04] Later that evening,
[00:14:06] Ryan was preparing for his date with Audrey.
[00:14:08] They were initially supposed to meet at a local bar for 9pm,
[00:14:12] but they pushed it back to 10pm.
[00:14:14] This would turn out to be a big mistake,
[00:14:18] because before Ryan could leave for his date,
[00:14:21] Shana would show back up,
[00:14:23] and some kind of confrontation would ensue.
[00:14:27] It's time for a quick break
[00:14:29] and a word from tonight's sponsors.

[00:16:07] Shortly after,
[00:16:08] a 911 call would come in.
[00:16:20] Boyfriend in South the Fed.
[00:16:22] Okay, where are you at?
[00:16:26] Kentucky.
[00:16:30] Okay, 12 Meadow Lane.
[00:16:31] Are you in a house or an apartment there?
[00:16:33] Yeah, I know.
[00:16:39] Anything else?
[00:16:40] Meadowview or something?
[00:16:41] No, it's fine.
[00:16:48] You're in.
[00:16:48] It's not showing on my computer.
[00:16:54] But then, okay, hold on, hold on.
[00:16:57] What did you kill him with?
[00:17:01] Tell me where the gun is right now.
[00:17:03] Tell me where it's at.
[00:17:35] Is that 15 minutes ago?
[00:17:37] No.
[00:18:01] Okay, what's your name again?
[00:18:02] Shana or Saina?
[00:18:08] Shana, okay.
[00:18:09] All right.
[00:18:12] So you're going to stay on the line with me, okay?
[00:18:14] Because this is what we're going to do.
[00:18:15] The officers go and want me to stay on the line with you.
[00:18:17] So when they get there,
[00:18:18] they're going to want to know where that gun is.
[00:18:19] And we want you to get out safely too, okay?
[00:18:22] Okay, are they going to arrest me?
[00:18:24] Ma'am, I don't know what they'll do.
[00:18:26] We're going to send them out.
[00:18:27] I'm going to stay on the line with you, okay?
[00:18:30] I mean, nothing exactly.
[00:18:34] What happened?
[00:18:36] He beat me and carried me out of my house.
[00:18:39] We had a city.
[00:18:41] He was right in front of me.
[00:19:00] Okay, and how old is he?
[00:19:03] He's 30.
[00:19:04] He would have been 30 on December the 30th.
[00:19:06] All right, what's his name?
[00:19:08] Ryan Carter posted.
[00:19:10] He's an attorney in Cincinnati.
[00:19:13] Okay, and then you had a history of domestic violence with him?
[00:19:18] Okay, and is this your gun?
[00:19:20] No, this is his gun.
[00:19:22] He keeps loaded guns in the house.
[00:19:24] So he slammed you into the couch,
[00:19:27] but you don't have any injuries?
[00:19:33] He's a lot bigger than me.
[00:19:34] He's 6'3", 200 pounds.
[00:19:36] I'm 5'8", 120.
[00:19:37] He's a lot bigger than me.
[00:19:38] And he picked me up, and I said,
[00:19:45] let me get my things at least if we're going to break up.
[00:19:48] And he wouldn't let me get my things.
[00:19:52] In the background, ma'am.
[00:20:00] It's just his phone system.
[00:20:01] His phone system has got a delay.
[00:20:03] And he keeps me coming.
[00:20:08] When they come here, they'll see how far that is.
[00:20:10] He threw me across the room.
[00:20:13] And I have someone who's outside almost right now,
[00:20:36] but I'm going to stay on the line with you, okay?
[00:20:38] When they tell me to, what I'm going to tell you to do is walk to the door
[00:20:44] with your hands up because we want you to come out safely, okay?
[00:20:48] So that's why I'm staying on the line with you.
[00:20:51] I'm just a dispatcher.
[00:20:53] I'm nothing but a dispatcher, so I can't tell you.
[00:20:55] My job is to keep you on the line,
[00:20:56] and make sure my officers get there safely and nothing happens to them, okay?
[00:20:59] A couple more times after that.
[00:21:19] Shot him again.
[00:22:48] I want you to set the phone down, but I do not want you to hang it up.
[00:22:52] I want you to go to your front door.
[00:22:53] I want you to open it up, walk outside the door with your hands in front of you.
[00:22:58] Okay, I will.
[00:22:59] And your hands open.
[00:23:01] The officers are at the top of the steps.
[00:23:03] But set the phone down.
[00:23:04] Okay, I'm going to do it.
[00:23:06] Okay.
[00:23:06] Okay, I set the phone down.
[00:23:08] Set the phone down and put your hands in front of you.
[00:23:10] I'm here.
[00:23:16] I set the phone down.
[00:23:17] I walk out the front door with my hands in palms down.
[00:23:20] I went, yes, with your hands open and straight in front of you.
[00:23:24] Officers are at the top of the steps.
[00:23:26] Okay, okay, bye.
[00:23:29] So a few things that are interesting about this 911 call.
[00:23:33] First thing is, I don't know if you caught that,
[00:23:36] but she said that she called 911 15 minutes after shooting Ryan.
[00:23:42] So what the hell was she doing during those 15 minutes before she would make that potentially
[00:23:47] life-saving call?
[00:23:49] She also says that Ryan was, quote, throwing her around the room like a rag doll, including
[00:23:54] against the furniture, onto the floor, and into the television.
[00:23:58] But that she had no injuries.
[00:24:01] One would assume that if such an act occurred, the condo would be an absolute wreck, right?
[00:24:08] This will become important later.
[00:24:10] Finally, she tells the dispatcher that she, quote,
[00:24:13] shot him a couple more times just to kill him because he was twitching and she knew that
[00:24:19] he was going to die anyway and he was making funny noises.
[00:24:23] After she makes this statement, the dispatcher's tone of voice almost immediately changes.
[00:24:30] When police and EMS arrived on scene, they find Ryan dead from six gunshot wounds.
[00:24:36] The way his body was positioned suggested that he was sitting at the dining room table when
[00:24:42] he was shot.
[00:24:43] The TV that Shana claimed to have been thrown into was in place and very dusty, suggesting
[00:24:50] that no one had come in contact with it.
[00:24:53] According to Chief Birkenhauer, the scene did not reflect any type of struggle.
[00:24:59] Investigators would take Shana back to the station for further questioning.
[00:25:03] It was a bizarre three-hour interview which was recorded on video.
[00:25:08] In the video, Shana can be seen and heard dancing around the room and singing at times.
[00:25:15] Here's a clip.
[00:26:34] Did you catch that at the end?
[00:26:41] She said, yes, I did it.
[00:26:43] I can't believe I did that.
[00:26:45] When she finally speaks to investigators about what had happened, according to her version
[00:26:50] of events, she says that Ryan was whacked on drugs and abusive towards her.
[00:26:56] That night at the condo, he was throwing her against the furniture as she tried to get her
[00:27:01] belongings and leave.
[00:27:02] Then he sat down at the dining room table and began telling her how much he hated her and hurling
[00:27:08] insults at her.
[00:27:10] According to Shana, he had a gun on the table, which he reached for, which is when she grabbed
[00:27:16] it and shot him.
[00:27:18] Shana described how first she shot Ryan in the face, saying,
[00:27:22] He's very vain.
[00:27:23] I shot him right here.
[00:27:25] I gave him his nose job.
[00:27:27] She ended it with,
[00:27:29] He deserved it.
[00:27:31] Immediately, the police are suspicious.
[00:27:33] The evidence just doesn't fit Shana's narrative of what happened the night that Ryan was shot.
[00:27:40] Shana was arrested and charged with murder.
[00:27:42] She was hauled off to jail and held on a $5 million bond.
[00:27:48] According to court records, at her trial, Shana testified that she,
[00:27:52] quote,
[00:27:52] Lost her recollection about what happened next, but remembers sitting near the dining room table
[00:27:58] with Ryan over top of her.
[00:28:00] She was crying hysterically, and when she tried to stand up, he pushed her back down.
[00:28:05] Then Ryan grabbed the gun, pointed it at her, and told her that he could kill her and get
[00:28:11] away with it.
[00:28:12] She testified that she was shocked and afraid.
[00:28:16] He put the gun down and walked back around the table while still saying hurtful things
[00:28:21] to her.
[00:28:21] He sat down briefly and began to stand back up while reaching across the table.
[00:28:27] She was not sure whether he was reaching for her or the gun, so she got up off the floor,
[00:28:34] grabbed the gun, and shot him.
[00:28:36] After the first shots, he let out a loud noise that sounded like an animal, and it freaked her
[00:28:43] out.
[00:28:43] She searched the apartment for her phone, and it took her a while to find it.
[00:28:48] She first called her mother and told her what happened before calling 911.
[00:28:54] While Shana pled not guilty, insisting that she only shot Ryan in self-defense, testimony
[00:29:01] and evidence presented at trial all suggested otherwise.
[00:29:06] A forensics expert testified that Shana shot Ryan three times while he was sitting down, then
[00:29:13] three more times.
[00:29:14] The expert also testified that four of Ryan's six gunshot wounds had stippling, indicating
[00:29:20] that the gun had been fewer than three feet away from him when the shots were fired.
[00:29:25] She shot him at close range.
[00:29:27] But what of the fact that Shana alleged Ryan had been physically violent with her that night?
[00:29:33] Neighbors who lived in the condo directly below Ryan's were at home on the evening of the
[00:29:38] shooting.
[00:29:39] They testified that on the night of the murder, they heard two shots.
[00:29:43] Then, approximately six seconds later, four more shots.
[00:29:48] They did not, however, hear anyone screaming or yelling prior to hearing the gunshots ring
[00:29:54] out.
[00:29:54] Meaning, they did not hear Ryan supposedly throwing Shana over the furniture.
[00:30:00] There were also text messages recovered between Shana and one of her friends just 11 days before
[00:30:06] the shooting.
[00:30:07] Shana said in the message, quote,
[00:30:16] Other messages on her phone to her friends said things like,
[00:30:19] Her love had turned to hate, and quote,
[00:30:23] On April 15, 2015, a jury convicted Shana Hubers of the murder of Ryan Poston.
[00:30:30] But that would not be the end of it.
[00:30:32] After discovering that a convicted felon served on the jury, Shana was granted a retrial in
[00:30:38] August of 2018.
[00:30:40] This time, even more damning evidence was presented.
[00:30:45] Three women who had been incarcerated with Shana testified about things that she said during
[00:30:50] their time together behind bars.
[00:30:52] Donna Dooley testified that Shana told her she had thrown things around Ryan's condo just
[00:30:58] before the shooting to make it appear as if he had been physically violent with her.
[00:31:03] According to Donna, Shana also told her that she shot Ryan because he was leaving her to
[00:31:08] go on a date with another woman that night.
[00:31:11] Another inmate named Holly Niven said that,
[00:31:14] Initially, Shana had told her Ryan abused her on the night of the shooting.
[00:31:19] But then, after some time, her story had changed.
[00:31:23] Later, she would say that she was actually the abuser that night,
[00:31:27] and that she had shot Ryan because he was breaking up with her.
[00:31:32] According to Holly, Shana also provided some key details of things that happened on that night.
[00:31:38] Allegedly, she said that Ryan had locked himself in the bathroom to avoid further confrontation,
[00:31:44] but that she had used a bobby pin to pick the lock and get in.
[00:31:48] While we can't always believe the testimony of other inmates because
[00:31:52] they may have been offered an incentive in exchange for their testimony,
[00:31:56] this one is backed up by evidence.
[00:32:00] Shana's search history revealed that on the night of Ryan's death,
[00:32:03] she had actually searched for how to unlock a door with a bobby pin.
[00:32:07] Though Shana would say that she looked this up so that she could get into Ryan's locked bedroom
[00:32:13] because it had her purse and her keys in it.
[00:32:16] Holly would also say that while Shana was on the prison phone crying to her family,
[00:32:22] she would look over to her and other inmates and smile and wink.
[00:32:26] Was she really that manipulative?
[00:32:29] Able to turn her emotions on and off?
[00:32:32] According to a third inmate named Cicely Miller, yes.
[00:32:37] Cicely claimed that Shana would laugh when talking about Ryan's death,
[00:32:41] that Shana said she knew that Ryan was going to be going on a date with Miss Ohio that night,
[00:32:47] and she killed him after he told her to leave.
[00:32:50] In her retrial, Shana Huber was once again convicted of murdering Ryan Poston
[00:32:56] and sentenced to life in prison.
[00:32:59] Ryan's family has since set up a memorial scholarship in his honor
[00:33:03] at Blessed Sacrament School in Fort Mitchell, where he once attended.
[00:33:07] The scholarship will be given each year to a Blessed Sacrament 6th grader who demonstrates,
[00:33:12] quote,
[00:33:12] passion and caring for others,
[00:33:15] qualities that Ryan had possessed when he was alive.
[00:33:19] As for Shana,
[00:33:20] she started up a new romance behind bars almost immediately,
[00:33:24] marrying a transgender woman named Unique Taylor.
[00:33:28] However, it was short-lived as Shana filed for divorce just a year later.
[00:33:32] She is currently serving her sentence at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women,
[00:33:38] and she'll be eligible for parole in 2032.
[00:33:42] This case highlights the often overlooked issue of male victims of domestic abuse,
[00:33:48] drawing so many parallels to the notorious Jodi Arias and Travis Alexander case.
[00:33:54] While public focus often centers on women as victims,
[00:33:58] stats show that 13.9% of men have experienced domestic abuse.
[00:34:05] However, men are less likely to report such incidents,
[00:34:09] because even when they do,
[00:34:11] they face lower chances of any arrest or police intervention.
[00:34:15] Many men also fail to recognize non-physical forms of abuse,
[00:34:20] like manipulation, stalking, and emotional control,
[00:34:24] leading to their continued victimization.
[00:34:28] This case serves as a stark reminder that abuse can take many forms,
[00:34:33] and all victims, regardless of gender, deserve recognition and justice.
